Preston Middle School reclaims state title in Science Olympiad

Preston Middle School reclaimed the state title it narrowly lost a year ago while winning its 14th state championship since 2010 and 15th overall in the Science Olympiad.
After losing by just three points last year, Preston’s Teal team easily outdistanced the runner-up defending champion, Homeschool Science Colorado, in the April 4 competition at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs, coach Elizabeth Loyd said.
With the win, the Preston Teal team moves on to the Science Olympiad National Tournament on May 22-23 at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.

Poudre School District teams dominated the competition, claiming six of the top 10 spots in the middle school division. Fossil Ridge teams finished both second and third behind the winning Homeschool Science Colorado team in the high school division.
Students compete in a series of 23 events, including a portion that are rotated each year. Topics include genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology, according to the Science Olympiad website.

Preston’s Teal team took the middle school title by finishing first in eight of the 23 events, second in six, and either third or fourth in four more. Its score of 63 points — the combined total of its placements in each category — was 53 points better than the second-place team in the 30-team middle school division.
Kinard Core Knowledge Middle School’s Gold team finished third, Lesher’s No. 1 team fifth, Preston’s Purple team sixth, Wellington’s Maroon team eighth and Kinard’s Blue team ninth.
