After his own diagnosis, New Orleans Broadway star starts foundation for children with Type 1 diabetes

Kyle Banks loves music. He always has — since his days at St. Augustine High School to completing graduate school at the University of Oklahoma. Now, he’s performing on Broadway.
He landed his first role off-Broadway before securing a slot as an ensemble member of “Wicked: The Musical” and later “The Lion King.”

In 2015, while he hopped from New York City to traveling Broadway casts, Banks started to feel tired during shows — a serious problem for performers. When he lost 30 pounds in three weeks, he knew it was time to see a doctor.
Weeks later, he was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

In 2020, Banks launched Kyler Cares, a foundation that works to improve the health outcomes for both adults and children living with Type 1 diabetes by improving access to technology, creating connections and resources to education, providing grants to those in need and connecting children and families to communities.

The average range for your blood sugar is between 70 and 120. Mine would drop down to like 20 or 30. I would be at work, on the stage, about to pass out on a nightly basis.
