How to build career resilience in the face of setbacks

When the norms of working life are in persistent flux, the need for professional resilience is often invoked. Better toughen up, is the advice, especially for women, and especially women seeking top jobs. There is confusion about what resilience means, says Mandy Rawlinson, head of UK and Emea at asset manager Aberdeen Investments. “Resilience is not about toughing it out. And my worry is that’s what people perceive that word to mean.”
Instead, she says, resilience involves “adaptability and recovery”. She was an international equestrian vaulter in her teens, and says she still draws guidance from sport. Rather than sheer endurance, she says: “It’s knowing how to absorb pressure, how to adapt quickly, and how to recover well so that you can perform again tomorrow.”
